Effect of Artificial Defoliation at Various Times , Severities and Leaf Ages on Flowering and Fruiting of Satsuma Mandarin

Abstract
Leaves of ten-year old Satsuma mandarin(Citrus unshiu MARC.) tree were artificially removed at various levels of severity by number of leaves, on Jan. 11, Feb. 15 and March 21. Number of flowers was reduced in accordance with the severity and earliness of leaf removal. Number of fruits was significantly reduced by complete defoliation regardless of the earliness. Many twigs affected by complete defoliation in early January turned brown and finally died. Removal of old leaves on April 9 resulted in increased abnormal flowers with poorely developed pistil, and reduced flower weight, fruitset and fruit diameter, while removal of new leaves caused the opposite results. In case of leaf removal on June 7, however, loss of new leaves also resulted in reduced fruit-set and fruit diameter, even though less conspicuously than that of old ones. The importance of old-leaf presence was discussed in relation to the fruit production.
